Hardness test for fasteners – Vickers test
In our control laboratory we perform hardness testing according to the Vickers test SS-EN ISO 6507, to ensure that the mechanical requirements for hardness are satisfied.
It is extremely important for the fasteners to satisfy the demands for hardness, surface hardness, core hardness and case depth in order for the bolted joint to work and last as expected. If the demands regarding the hardness of e.g. a washer are not satisfied, this can lead to yielding in the washer. This yielding in turn reduces the bolted joint’s clamping force and the screw can become loose.
The control samples we take before a delivery is sorted into the warehouse include a Vickers test. The hardness test helps us to be sure that the fastener’s mechanical properties satisfy the requirements in the standard and the purchase contract that applies to the product.
